Life changes and the impact on behaviour change

A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology has concluded that people may be more open to making lifestyle changes at a time of other big upheavals in their lives – such as buying a house or changing jobs.   

Psychologists from the University of Bath were trying to determine whether introducing eco-products when people had recently moved house would be more or less successful to changing recycling behaviour and reducing energy use. The findings were that the intervention was more successful when given to those who had recently moved into a new home than those who hadn’t.

The findings make for interesting thinking when considering health behaviour change: is it also true that people are more likely to stop smoking, eat healthier, start exercising at the same time as starting a new job? Are there certain opportune moments when making lasting behaviour change in relation to health are more likely?
