Alcohol Relapse Prevention Pilot 2011-2012

The Bolton SHINE Alcohol Relapse Prevention Project was one of 14 projects nationally selected for a funding award by The Health Foundation in 2011. ‘Shine’ is an annual programme from the Health Foundation that focuses on innovation, with the aim of improving the quality of care.

One of the key premises of the successful proposal was that alcohol dependency is known to be a relapsing condition. Hence many people who enter the alcohol treatment system fail to control their dependency in the longer term. Consequently, many alcohol dependent clients undertake multiple detox and aftercare courses. The human and financial costs of this, together with associated healthcare, welfare and criminal justice costs, are considerable.

This project was not as much about using latest technologies than it was about using existing and widely available SMS technologies in an innovative way to solve a real life problem and find a cost effective solution in alcohol relapse prevention field.

The choice of mobile phone technology as an engagement medium to monitor and help prevent alcohol relapse is fairly radical and to our knowledge only very limited number of studies have been presented worldwide.

The pilot run in Bolton for 18 months and the project now is spreading nationally presenting opportunities in alcohol, drugs, mental health and other health areas.
